There is no occasion to seek dislike: it comes without seeking quickly enough... Some manage to be on bad terms with all, because they always either produce or experience vexation of spirit. Once hate has taken root it is, like bad repute, difficult to eradicate.

Dislike is an ecosystem, not an event: it accumulates from small vexations, the sarcasm that always finds its mark, the correction that always arrives publicly, the mood that must be managed by everyone nearby, until one day a decision goes against you and no single opponent can be identified, because the opposition is atmospheric. The observation about the producers of vexation is worth the whole maxim: some people generate friction as a by-product of their daily operation and are genuinely surprised by the harvest. The defence is not popularity-chasing but emission control: audit what it costs others to deal with you, and stop issuing the small daily reasons.
Practice
- Find your vexation emissions honestly: the habit colleagues brace for; a safe informant plus one direct question will name it (maxim 89's outside data).
- Fix the frequent small frictions before the rare large ones; atmospheres are built from dailies, and dailies are cheap to change.
- Track the respect of the room's edges, assistants, juniors, peers you outrank; coalitions recruit there first, and warmth there is your early-warning system.
Use this when
- Use this before promotion and committee seasons, when accumulated atmosphere converts into votes.
- Use it on your written tone especially; text preserves vexation in shareable form (maxim 86's mob now has a forward button).
Ignore this when
- Don't buy likability with your standards or your honest No; the target is needless friction, not necessary firmness (maxims 29 and 54 stand).
- Don't chase being liked by all; that project produces its own dislike, and maxim 245 notes that universal approval means you stand for little.
A picture of it
The promotion panel's file on him was excellent and its room was cold, and no member could have produced a single disqualifying incident. What existed instead was eleven years of exhaust: the clever remark at every colleague's expense, the corrections timed for audiences, the meetings everyone left slightly smaller. His rival's file was a shade thinner and the room warmed when her name came up, for reasons equally hard to cite. The panel called it "fit". The atmosphere, which he had manufactured daily in units too small to notice, had finally condensed into a decision.
Nobody is sunk by one enemy. Careers drown in an accumulation of small vexations, each too minor to apologise for.
