The Art of Prudence (Baltasar Gracián's Maxims)

Get Yourself Missed

Be necessary to the office, never the office to you. The test of standing is what your absence weighs.

Reputation

Few reach such favour with the many... The sure way is to excel in your office and talents: add to this agreeable manner and you reach the point where you become necessary to your office, not your office to you. Some do honour to their post, with others 'tis the other way.

Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)

The polarity sorts every professional: some honour the post, and some are honoured by it. The first kind would be missed, their judgment, standard, and manner subtracted from the room; the second would merely be replaced, since the chair was doing their work. The engine of missability is the formula: excellence in the role PLUS the agreeable manner, because competence alone is replaceable by competence, while the combination, trusted judgment wrapped in a person people like dealing with, is what absence reveals as irreplaceable. The caution completes it: being missed must flow from your presence being valuable, not from your systems being hostage; the fixer who ensures chaos in his absence is running a protection racket, not a reputation.

Practice

  • Build the missable layer above the replaceable one: systems documented and juniors trained (so nothing is hostage), while your judgment, standards, and manner remain the part no handover transfers.
  • Take real leave and read the telemetry honestly: what broke, whom did people wait for, what waited for you? That is your standing, measured.
  • Add the agreeable-manner term deliberately; the excellent-but-difficult are replaced with relief, which is the opposite of missed.

Use this when

  • Use this as your promotion barometer; organisations elevate people whose absence they have felt (and the leave test is cheaper than the resignation test).
  • Use it planning exits: leaving while missed is the whole mechanism of maxim 110's majestic sunset.

Ignore this when

  • Don't engineer dependence to be missed; hostage-systems are discovered exactly once, at maximum cost (maxim 5's corrupt version, same grave).
  • Don't mourn being smoothly covered for a week; that is your systems working. The question is whether the judgment was missed, not the hands.

A picture of it

Two department heads took long leave the same quarter. The first returned to backlogs, small crises, and open relief, proof, he announced, of his importance; the auditor's report later used the word "key-man risk" and the succession plan used his rival's name. The second returned to a running department, no fires, and a stack of decisions his deputy had correctly parked with the note "wanted your judgment on this one." Everything replaceable about him had been replaced for three weeks. What could not be, the organisation had felt the shape of, precisely. He was promoted into the room where such shapes are discussed.

If everything stops without you, you built a hostage. If nothing changes, you built nothing. Aim for the third result: it runs, and it waits for your judgment.
