Man's life is a warfare against the malice of men. Sagacity fights with strategic changes of intention: it never does what it threatens, it aims only at escaping notice... It lets the first impulse pass by and waits for the second, or even the third.
Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)
The bluntest sentence in the whole book: life is a warfare against the malice of men. Not all men, not always, but enough that the stated agenda and the real agenda of any consequential meeting are rarely the same document. Skilled operators show one intention to draw your attention and land the real one elsewhere. The defence is not paranoia; it is patience. Let the first signal pass. Watch the second. The proposal is rarely about what its title says; the objection is rarely about the point being objected to. Read moves in sequences, not in isolation.
Practice
- In any negotiation, ask what this move sets up rather than what it asks for. Openings are purchased, not offered.
- When an opponent shows an intention loudly, mark the direction he is NOT drawing your eye toward.
- Vary your own patterns; predictable people get anticipated (this pairs with maxim 17).
Use this when
- Use this in vendor negotiations, restructuring season, and any table where the stakes are postings or budgets.
- Use it on unusually generous offers; generosity from an operator has a floor plan.
Ignore this when
- Don't run this filter on family and friends. Reading feints where there are none manufactures the malice it fears.
- Don't out-scheme yourself into paralysis. Most days, most people, the surface meaning is the meaning.
A picture of it
In a budget meeting, a rival department loudly contests a small allocation, tables thump, minutes fill. The distracted room concedes elsewhere just to move on, which was the point: the noisy item was the decoy, the real prize slid through unopposed two lines below it. One officer caught it, because she had learned to ask of every commotion: what is this noise buying, and who is at the till while we watch the show?
Watch the second intention. The first one was printed for your benefit.
