Things do not pass for what they are but for what they seem. To be of use and to know how to show yourself of use, is to be twice as useful. What is not seen is as if it was not... A good exterior is the best recommendation of the inner perfection.

The best-run systems produce the least drama, which means the best operators generate the least evidence. If your unit runs so smoothly that leadership never hears of it, leadership concludes it runs itself. This is the tax on competence, and the remedy is not self-promotion but reporting: making the work legible to the people who allocate futures. The distinction matters. Self-promotion says look at me; legibility says here is what happened, what it cost, and what it prevented. One is resented, the other is filed and remembered. Preventions especially need translation, because a disaster that did not happen leaves no trace unless you leave one.
Practice
- Write the periodic one-pager upward: what shipped, what it saved, what nearly went wrong and was caught. Facts, no adjectives (maxim 41 polices the tone).
- Translate preventions into numbers: the outage avoided, the error caught before dispatch, the customer retained. Invisible work needs a unit.
- Attach names to the work, including your team's; visible credit distributed makes visibility a service rather than a claim.
Use this when
- Use this if your role is maintenance, risk, compliance, or back-office, where success looks like silence.
- Use it before appraisal and budget cycles; decisions are made from what is legible in that fortnight, not from the year's reality.
Ignore this when
- Don't let visibility outrun substance; the seen-but-hollow are audited eventually and remembered permanently (maxim 48 waits inside).
- Don't perform urgency to be noticed; manufacturing visible crises to solve is the corrupt version of this maxim and everyone eventually spots it.

The IT security lead's team had a flawless year, which is to say nothing happened, and the budget review proposed cutting them by a third. She started a quarterly page: attacks blocked, phishing attempts stopped, hours of downtime prevented against the industry average, each with a number the finance head could read without translation. No drama, no adjectives. The following year the team grew. The work had been identical both years; only one version of it was visible.
Do the work, then make it legible. Invisible excellence is a gift to your successor, not to you.
