The Art of Prudence (Baltasar Gracián's Maxims)

Do not be Glass in Intercourse, still less in Friendship

The easily broken hand everyone a remote control. Take offence at everything and everyone learns to avoid you.

Self-Mastery

Some break very easily, and thereby show their want of consistency. They attribute to themselves imaginary offences and to others oppressive intentions... Motes offend them: they need not wait for beams... They are mostly very egoistic, slaves of their moods... On the other hand, the disposition of the true lover is firm and enduring.

Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)

The thin-skinned person imagines they are demanding respect and is actually surrendering control. When you break at every slight, read offence into every neutral act, and require constant careful handling, you have handed everyone around you a set of buttons, and the people who wish you well grow exhausted while the people who wish you ill grow equipped. The maxim's contrast is sharp: the glass personality is egotistical, ruled by its moods, forever finding motes where there are not even beams, while the firm disposition, the true friend, is durable and hard to offend. Being difficult to wound is not coldness. It is what makes you safe to be close to, and it keeps the controls of your mood in your own hands.

Practice

  • Assume the neutral reading first; most slights are motes, and finding beams in them is a habit you can drop (maxim 140 extracts the good first).
  • Notice if people handle you carefully; the walking-on-eggshells you sense is the cost of being breakable, paid by everyone near you.
  • Widen the gap between stimulus and offence; the durable person feels the slight and simply chooses not to be governed by it (maxim 8 keeps the reins).

Use this when

  • Use this as self-examination when you find yourself frequently wounded; the frequency, not the world, is usually the signal.
  • Use it in close relationships, where thin skin does the most damage and firmness is the greater kindness.

Ignore this when

  • Don't confuse durability with tolerating genuine mistreatment; being hard to offend by motes is not the same as accepting real harm.
  • Don't swing into numbness; the firm disposition still feels, it just refuses to be ruled by every passing slight.

A picture of it

A talented team member is known, privately, as someone to handle with care: a wrong-toned email ruins his week, a joke lands as an insult, feedback becomes a wound. His colleagues start routing around him, softening everything, eventually just excluding him from the candid conversations where the real work happens. The exclusion he senses confirms his feeling of being wronged, which is the trap closing. Nothing about his talent changed his standing; his breakability did. The colleague of equal skill who could take a blunt note without collapse got the honest input, and with it, the better work.

Thin skin does not command respect; it hands out remote controls. Be hard to break, and keep your own moods in your own hands.
