The Art of Prudence (Baltasar Gracián's Maxims)

Avoid Familiarities in Intercourse

Every familiarity spends a little respect. Keep a margin, up and down, or the closeness starts costing you standing.

Power & Politics

He that is familiar, loses any superiority his influence gives him, and so loses respect... In human affairs, the more a man shows, the less he has, for in open communication you communicate the failings that reserve might keep under cover. Familiarity is never desirable; with superiors because it is dangerous, with inferiors because it is unbecoming.

Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)

There is a difference between warmth and familiarity, and the second slowly drains what the first builds. Over-closeness exposes the small failings that a little reserve would keep out of view, and once seen, they lower you in the eyes that saw them. The counsel is a margin, not coldness: be warm, be accessible, and still keep a zone that is not on display. With seniors, excess familiarity reads as presumption and invites a reminder of rank. With juniors, it forfeits the distance that authority runs on, and some will mistake your friendliness for a need you have of them. Reserve is not distance for its own sake. It is what keeps respect and warmth from cancelling each other out.

Practice

  • Keep one zone off display, even with people you like at work; the fully-exposed person has spent the reserve that respect needs.
  • Calibrate by direction: a touch more reserve upward to avoid presumption, a clear line downward to keep authority intact.
  • Read the tell: when a junior starts treating your warmth as leverage, the margin has slipped and needs restoring without coldness.

Use this when

  • Use this in hierarchies you work inside daily, where the line between warm and over-familiar decides how you are handled.
  • Use it with new seniors especially; early over-familiarity is hard to walk back.

Ignore this when

  • Don't confuse reserve with unapproachability; the door stays open and the manner stays warm, only the full self is not on constant show (maxim 74 keeps you accessible).
  • Don't hold reserve against genuine intimates; family and true friends are exactly where the margin comes down (maxim 156 names them).

A picture of it

A new manager, wanting to be liked, becomes one of the team in every way: the same jokes, the same complaints about the company, every personal detail shared over lunch. Within months the hardest thing in his job is getting the same team to accept a hard decision, because he has spent the distance that a difficult call requires. The colleague who stayed warm but kept a margin, friendly at lunch, clear at the desk, can still say no and have it land. Same likability, different standing, and the difference was the reserve one of them kept and the other gave away.

Be warm and keep a margin. Familiarity spends respect one exposure at a time, and it does not refund.
