All fools come to grief from want of thought. They never see even the half of things... Some make much of what imports little and little of much, always weighing in the wrong scale.
Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)
Weighing in the wrong scale: no better description exists of how attention actually gets spent. The comparison sheet for a phone gets nine evenings; the health policy that will carry the family through its worst night gets signed at the counter, unread. It is not stupidity, it is comfort: small decisions are pleasant to think about, reversible, and rich in reviews, while the great ones are heavy, rare, and irrevocable, so the mind slides off them toward the shopping. Discipline means matching thought to stakes, deliberately, since it will never happen by inclination.
Practice
- Sort decisions by reversibility: the irreversible ones (marriage, home, resignation, surgery, guarantor signatures) get scheduled thinking time, on paper.
- For any major decision, force one structured hour: options, worst cases, who advises, what would change your mind. One hour is more than most give a lifetime call.
- Catch the displacement tell: research pleasure on trivia while a big question sits unopened is the wrong scale in action.
Use this when
- Use this in the decade when the irreversible decisions cluster: parents' care, children's paths, the exit date, the corpus.
- Use it in reverse to liberate the small stuff: under-deliberate the trivial on purpose and bank the saved attention.
Ignore this when
- Don't turn deliberation into permanent postponement; the structured hour ends with a date, not another hour.
- Don't apply committee-grade process to matters of taste; some choices are meant to be cheap and quick.
A picture of it
The family spent three weekends choosing the television: spreadsheets, showroom visits, a group vote. The health cover renewal arrived the same month; the head of the house ticked "same as last year" between two phone calls, not noticing the room-rent cap that no longer matched any hospital in the city. The television performed flawlessly. So did the wrong scale, four years later, in a billing office at midnight.
Match the thinking to the stakes. The showroom decisions will survive your neglect; the signature decisions will not.
