Most things depend on the satisfaction of others. Esteem is to excellence what the zephyr is to flowers, the breath of life. There are some callings which gain universal esteem, while others more important are without credit... An able man will prefer callings en evidence.

The advice concedes its own injustice: some callings are MORE important and less credited, and the counsel is still to prefer the visible ones, because esteem is oxygen for a career and starving yourself of it on principle is a slow tax paid annually. Translated honestly for organisations: work streams differ enormously in visibility, and the ambitious should weigh that as a real factor, not a vulgar one. The rescue is louder than the prevention; the launch is louder than the maintenance that makes launches possible. If you choose the sealed room anyway, and someone must, and it can be noble, choose it with open eyes and compensate deliberately: import visibility through reporting, teaching, and record, since the work itself will never export any.
Practice
- Weigh visibility when choosing roles and projects; between two assignments of equal substance, the seen one compounds and the unseen one evaporates.
- If your calling is structurally invisible, build the evidence layer yourself: the periodic note upward, the metrics record, the named prevented-disaster (maxim 130 is the toolkit).
- When you lead, deliberately shine light into the sealed rooms you depend on; esteem you route to the invisible is the cheapest retention budget there is.
Use this when
- Use this at posting and specialisation choices, where a decade of visibility difference is being signed unread.
- Use it counselling your children between fields; passion and aptitude first, but let them see this variable before it sees them.
Ignore this when
- Don't read it as "abandon important invisible work"; someone must run the engine room, and the maxim's real demand is informed consent plus imported light.
- Don't chase pure visibility without substance; the seen-but-hollow get audited by time (maxim 48 waits for them).
A picture of it
Two epidemiologists of equal gift diverge at thirty. One works outbreaks: cameras, briefings, a public name. The other works prevention: surveillance systems whose triumph is that nothing happens, the most important silence in public health. At fifty the first advises governments. The second, wiser than the maxim assumes, had understood the trade at thirty-five and built her evidence layer: annual published reviews, a training program bearing her name, a documented count of outbreaks-that-weren't. The room was sealed. She installed windows.
