The truest wild beasts live in the most populous places. To be inaccessible is the fault of those who distrust themselves, whose honours change their manners... It is no way of earning people's goodwill by being ill-tempered with them.
Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)
The diagnosis cuts: inaccessibility is not strength but self-distrust wearing a crown, the fear that closeness will reveal what distance conceals. And the punishment is structural, not social. The unapproachable boss is not merely disliked; he is uninformed, because every organism around him learns that bringing him things, problems, warnings, early signals, costs more than it pays. The bad news queues outside his door until it is too large to carry. Meanwhile the accessible leader is running an intelligence network disguised as a personality: people tell him things early, cheaply, and voluntarily, which is the only time information is worth anything. Approachability, rightly understood, is not the opposite of authority. It is one of its supply lines.
Practice
- Price your reactions consciously: every snapped response to a bearer of bad news raises the cost of your next warning arriving on time.
- Keep structured openness: the walked floor, the open hour, the meal taken where your people eat; access with rhythm beats access by mood.
- Watch for the silence signal: when your team stops bringing you small problems, the large one is already growing somewhere unattended.
Use this when
- Use this hardest just after promotions; honours change manners, the quote says, and the first months of a new rank set the access price permanently.
- Use it at home in the same coin: the parent expensive to approach with small failures will not be approached with the large ones (the teenager's silence is the invoice).
Ignore this when
- Don't confuse accessibility with unlimited availability; the door has hours, the hours are honoured, and maxim 33 still guards the calendar.
- Don't perform friendliness while punishing content; false access, warm on style and cold on substance, is discovered fast and priced as treachery.
A picture of it
The new plant head inherits a factory with a famous grievance backlog and a canteen the managers never enter. He changes two things only: Tuesday lunches at the general tables, and a rule for himself, whoever brings a problem is thanked before the problem is discussed. Six months of unremarkable Tuesdays later, a machine operator mentions, between bites, a bearing vibration nobody had logged because "sir, reporting it used to mean forms and blame". The repair costs an afternoon. The failure it pre-empted had cost his predecessor nine days of line-down and, eventually, the job whose chair he now occupies.
Build a door people can afford to knock on. The knock you priced away was the warning.
