The Art of Prudence (Baltasar Gracián's Maxims)

Never set to work at anything if you have any doubts of its Prudence

If you had to talk yourself into it, the case was already closed. Your own scruple is the first verdict.

Judgment & Reading People

A suspicion of failure in the mind of the doer is proof positive of it in that of the onlooker, especially if he is a rival. If in the heat of action your judgment feels scruples, it will afterwards in cool reflection condemn it as a piece of folly... Wisdom does not trust to probabilities; it always marches in the mid-day light of reason.

Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)

There is a specific feeling this maxim names: the plan you keep re-justifying, the purchase you argue for against a resistance that lives in your own chest. The scruple is treated as evidence, and the logic is sharp: if your judgment doubts the thing now, in the flattering light of enthusiasm, its cool later verdict is already known; and the doubt leaks, visible to onlookers, fatal if one is a rival. This is not a ban on risk. Well-judged risks feel clean; the odds are faced, the downside priced, the mind marches at midday. The maxim targets the other kind: the venture that requires persuading yourself daily, which is a full-time job with no product except the eventual, predictable regret.

Practice

  • Track the re-justification count: a decision you have defended to yourself three times without new facts is a verdict being appealed by desire.
  • Separate clean fear from scruple: fear says this is big; scruple says this is wrong-shaped. The first accompanies good risks; the second precedes bad ones.
  • When the scruple persists, name it on paper before proceeding; most collapse into a specific fixable flaw, or stand up and save you.

Use this when

  • Use this on investments and partnerships that need selling to yourself; anything requiring internal marketing has failed internal review.
  • Use it on schemes whose main argument is that everyone is doing it; borrowed conviction is the commonest anaesthetic for scruples.

Ignore this when

  • Don't confuse inexperience-nerves with prudence-doubts; first times feel doubtful by default, so test against the shape of the fear, not its volume.
  • Don't demand zero doubt for every act; midday light is for the significant and the irreversible, not the daily (maxim 72 still forbids the dam).

A picture of it

The scheme returned twenty-two percent, on paper, guaranteed, from a man his cousin vouched for. He noticed, honestly, what he was doing on the walk home: rehearsing the defence, assembling answers to questions nobody had asked yet, avoiding one particular colleague's imagined face. He had never needed rehearsals for his index funds. The scruple was the entire analysis, complete before any document arrived. He declined by message that night. The scheme paid beautifully for eleven more months, which was exactly the hard part, and then it did what his chest had known in the first minute.

Good decisions survive your doubt. Bad ones require your salesmanship. Notice which service you're providing.
