Emergency fund
The fund that lets you sleep. How many months could you survive without income? Then build toward six.
Keep this money safe and instant, a sweep-in FD or liquid fund. Not in equity.
About the emergency fund calculator
An emergency fund is cash set aside for the month the income stops or a big bill lands. It is boring, and it is what stops a shock from becoming a spiral.
How big should it be?
Usually three to six months of essential expenses, not income. If your job or income is less certain, lean toward six or more.
Where should I keep it?
Somewhere safe and reachable within a day or two: a savings account, a sweep FD, or a liquid fund. Growth is not the goal here, access is.
Should I invest it for better returns instead?
No. The moment you chase returns with it, it stops being an emergency fund. Its job is to be there, in full, on the worst day.
