In the body of wisdom not the least important organ is a big stomach, for great capacity implies great parts. Big bits of luck do not embarrass one who can digest still bigger ones... they do not find their proper place, for luck finds no proper place in them.
Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)
Everyone trains for adversity; almost nobody trains for arrival. Yet sudden good fortune, the windfall, the double promotion, the overnight success, wrecks people as reliably as disaster, just more slowly and with better photographs. The undigested win shows the same symptoms everywhere: spending recalibrated to the peak, humility recalibrated to zero, old relationships suddenly beneath the new altitude. Digestion, the word used here, is exact: the capacity to absorb a large event into an unchanged frame, so the luck finds its proper place instead of rearranging the whole person. That capacity is built before the win arrives, or not at all.
Practice
- Pre-decide the windfall protocol in calm times: what percentage gets locked away, what changes, and, more important, what does not.
- After any big win, impose a six-month freeze on lifestyle and self-image upgrades; let the event finish arriving before you renovate around it.
- Watch your treatment of old people and old routines after new success; they are the instruments on which digestion is measured.
Use this when
- Use this before the liquidity event, the arrears payout, the property sale; the protocol must predate the cheque.
- Use it watching others: how a person carries a win tells you their capacity for the next one (maxim 49's low-stakes tells, at high altitude).
Ignore this when
- Don't confuse digestion with joylessness; celebrate fully, then file the event; the freeze is on restructuring, not on happiness.
- Don't judge the small-stomached harshly from outside; capacity untested is exactly what most of us are walking around with.
A picture of it
The buyout made both flatmates wealthy on the same afternoon. One upgraded everything within a year, city, circle, self-introduction, and needed the next win urgently to service the new altitude; when it came late, the interim was ugly. The other locked the bulk away, kept the flat another year, and gave himself twelve months to decide what the money was actually for. A decade later, one of them still speaks of the buyout as the beginning of something. The other, with less left, speaks of it as the peak. Same slice. Different stomachs.
Adversity tests your strength. Windfalls test your size. Build the stomach before the feast.
