Strip the royalty and a working principle remains: conduct is not rationed by rank. The clerk can process a file with a director's care; the junior can keep a standard of speech, dress, and dealing that belongs two levels up; and the definition matters, true kingship lies in rectitude, not in trappings, so the standard being borrowed is one of conduct, not of airs. Two things follow. Practically, rooms assign futures to people who already behave like them; the promotion usually confirms what the conduct announced. And inwardly, dignity maintained at a small desk is the same muscle as dignity at a large one; the man who has it need not envy greatness, because he is already running its software.
Practice
- Pick the role you aspire to and adopt its conduct now: its punctuality, its discretion, its finish on documents; the chair follows the behaviour more often than the reverse.
- Keep the "within due limits" clause: borrow the next role's standards, never its authority; acting the rank you don't hold is the failure mode (maxim 106 polices it).
- Hold the standard hardest in low-status moments, the small task, the unglamorous posting; dignity that fluctuates with the audience was costume.
Use this when
- Use this in the years when your title undersells you; conduct is the only promotion you can grant yourself.
- Use it to coach juniors: the fastest development instruction ever written is "do this job to the standard of the next one".
Ignore this when
- Don't let princely conduct become princely expense; the standard is rectitude and finish, not lifestyle (maxim 102 already froze that).
- Don't perform dignity as stiffness; the real article bends warmly and breaks for nothing (maxim 79 keeps it human).
A picture of it
The retail chain's youngest store manager ran her mid-size outlet like a flagship: the same audit discipline, the same staff reviews, the same standard of reply to head office, none of it required at her grade. The zonal head noticed what he later admitted was the deciding detail: her monthly reports read like they were written for the board, because, as she said when asked, someday one would be. When the flagship opened, the shortlist was long and the decision was not. She had been doing the job for two years. Only the chair was new.
Titles are granted from above. Dignity is issued by yourself, and rooms read it before they read your card.
