Mediocrity obtains more with application than superiority without it. Work is the price which is paid for reputation. What costs little is little worth.

Ability sets the ceiling; application decides how close anyone actually gets to it. Most people live so far below their ceiling that the ceilings barely matter, which is why the applied average person passes the idle gifted one on the stairs, in every field, in every decade. This is the most useful sentence a teenager can absorb before board exams, and it is just as load-bearing at forty-five, when talent has become reputation and reputation tempts you to coast. Work is the price of the name, and the price is charged on subscription, not once.
Practice
- Praise hours, not IQ, at home and at work. People praised for being smart start protecting the label by avoiding hard things.
- Pair every talent with a system: the gifted writer needs a writing schedule more than a lesser writer does.
- When outclassed on ability, compete on thoroughness. Preparation is the great equaliser and it cannot be gatekept.
Use this when
- Use this when hiring between the brilliant-but-erratic and the solid-but-relentless; over three years the second usually wins.
- Use it on the season after a success, when the temptation to coast is best funded.
Ignore this when
- Don't glorify grind without direction. Ten distracted hours lose to three aimed ones; effort needs a target.
- Don't use it to flog exhaustion out of yourself. Application is a pace, not a permanent sprint (maxim 174 holds the other end).
A picture of it
Two students from one colony, one school. The first, visibly brilliant, treated brilliance as the plan. The second, ordinary by every measure, kept a study log, revised on schedule, and asked for help without shame. The board results surprised the colony. The selection exams years later surprised nobody, because by then the pattern was old: the ceiling never sat the exam, the floor of daily hours did.
Talent is the loan. Application is the repayment. Defaults are visible from the fifth year.
