There are rules of luck: it is not all chance with the wise: it can be assisted by care... on a true philosophy there is no other umpire than virtue and insight; for there is no luck or ill-luck except wisdom and the reverse.

Strip the goddess imagery and a working formula remains: luck is opportunity multiplied by readiness multiplied by position. You control two of the three terms fully and the third partially, which is why over twenty years the same people keep "getting lucky." They stand where opportunities pass: visible roles, live networks, rooms where things are decided. They stay ready: skills current, finances slack, documents in order. And when the window opens they move, because a chance you hesitate over goes to whoever was ready. Fortune favours the bold mostly because the bold are the only ones at the counter when she opens it.
Practice
- Position: choose desks and forums where opportunity traffic is heavy, even at some comfort cost.
- Readiness: keep the CV current, the emergency fund full, and one skill ahead of your role; luck hates lead time.
- Response: pre-decide your yes conditions for the big chances (posting, offer, opening) so the window meets a decision, not a committee.
Use this when
- Use this instead of envying the lucky; reverse-engineer their positioning, most of it is copiable.
- Use it in lean seasons: position and readiness are exactly the work that lean seasons are for.
Ignore this when
- Don't moralise it backwards; others' misfortune is not proof of their imprudence. The formula improves odds, it does not decide cases.
- Don't confuse motion with position. Being everywhere is not being anywhere useful.
A picture of it
For a decade the staffroom calls her lucky: lucky training invite, lucky pilot project, lucky mention in the department's annual report. Meanwhile she had said yes to the workshop nobody wanted, kept her materials ready to share, and sat where new programmes were discussed. When the education board needed a resource person, she was standing at the gate, prepared. The staffroom updated its verdict from "lucky" to "obviously". Neither word was earned by chance.
Chance deals the cards. Position, readiness, and nerve play them. Everyone calls the score luck.
