The rarest individuals depend on their age. It is not every one that finds the age he deserves, and even when he finds it he does not always know how to utilise it... The sage has one advantage: he is immortal. If this is not his century many others will be.

Some people are born into the century that wants exactly what they have; most are not, and no amount of merit changes the year on the calendar. The craftsman's decade favours coders, then communicators, then something else, and the wheel does not consult you. Two responses are useless: bitterness at the era, and imitation of whoever the era currently rewards. The working response is translation: find which part of your gift the present age will pay for, and lead with that face of it, without discarding the rest. Gifts out of season are not dead. They are inventory.
Practice
- Separate your gift from its current packaging: the skill is judgment, not the memo format it grew up in.
- Watch what your era underprices, deep reading, patience, discretion, and hold that stock; underpriced is not worthless.
- Retool the interface, not the core: the born teacher learns the camera, the born writer learns the platform.
Use this when
- Use this when a younger, shallower version of your skill is being celebrated; the market is signalling packaging, not verdicts.
- Use it planning the second act: the practice after service must fit the age it launches into, not the age you trained in.
Ignore this when
- Don't surrender your core to fashion; eras rotate, and the sold-off gift is expensive to buy back.
- Don't use "wrong era" as anaesthetic. Most complaints about the age are deferrals of the translation work.
A picture of it
A veteran insurance advisor panics as buying moves to apps and comparison sites, then notices the one thing the apps cannot stock: someone who reads the fine print and tells the truth about it. He relearns his trade one voice note at a time and becomes the person clients forward to their children. The era repriced his packaging. The gift held its value, once he stopped filing grievances against the calendar.
