The moment you declare an intention, you hand the room a scorecard. Every delay becomes visible, every doubter gets a target, and if the plan dies you are twice damaged: once by the failure, once by its publicity. Work held in reserve carries none of these taxes. This is not secrecy for its own sake. It is sequencing: let people meet your work when it is strong enough to defend itself. Oversharing feels like openness and mostly functions as free ammunition.
Practice
- Announce results, not intentions: the transfer after the order, the venture after the first revenue, the book after the draft.
- In projects, share the completed stage, not the shaky middle. Half-built things prejudice the audience against the whole.
- Keep one or two capabilities unadvertised. The skill nobody priced in is your best negotiation asset.
Use this when
- Use this with ambitions, exits, side projects, and anything a rival could pre-empt or a critic could jinx.
- Use it upward: bosses respect outcomes delivered more than plans narrated.
Ignore this when
- Don't use it where coordination needs transparency; a team cannot follow a leader whose map is private.
- Don't let suspense rot into secretiveness at home. A spouse is a partner, not an audience.
