Eyes and hands: the metaphor does all the work. Knowledge sees, courage acts, and neither is worth much alone. Every office has its brilliant analyst whose insights die in his drafts folder, and its bold operator who charges confidently in the wrong direction. The first lacks hands, the second lacks eyes. Mid-career life keeps setting the same exam: you know the right call, and the only question is whether you will say it, sign it, or send it. The knowing was the easy half.
Practice
- Track your unsent drafts: the email, the proposal, the request for the raise. Each is knowledge without hands.
- Buy courage with preparation. Nerve is cheapest when the homework is done and the downside is measured.
- Take one small brave action weekly: the correction offered, the question asked in the big meeting. Nerve is a muscle, not a mood.
Use this when
- Use this when you catch yourself researching a decision for the fourth time; the fourth pass is fear wearing glasses.
- Use it to diagnose teams: are we short of ideas here, or short of spine?
Ignore this when
- Don't confuse courage with impulsiveness. Acting before seeing is not brave, it is blind.
- Don't demand daily heroics of yourself. Courage is for the moments that matter; routine runs on discipline.
A picture of it
A junior doctor notices that a dosing protocol goes wrong for one category of elderly patients. She writes it up, checks it twice, and sits on it; the committee chair designed the protocol. Months later a visiting consultant raises the same point in one sentence at a case review, and the change takes twenty minutes. The analysis had been on her laptop the whole time. The missing ingredient was never knowledge.
Wisdom sees the door. Courage walks through it. Live in the gap between them and you live parked.
