The Art of Prudence (Baltasar Gracián's Maxims)

Keep a Store of Sarcasms, and know how to use them

The teasing remark is rarely idle. It is a probe, priced for deniability. Read it before you laugh.

Speech & Silence

Such sarcasms are often thrown out to test men's moods, and by their means one often obtains the most subtle and penetrating touchstone of the heart... a shot foreseen always misses its mark.

Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)

The barbed joke is social sonar. "So, still waiting for that promotion?" delivered with a smile at a family function is not humour; it is a depth charge measuring what comes back: a flinch, a boast, a crack in the marriage, a grievance ready to be recruited. Skilled operators map entire rooms this way, and deniability is built into the pricing, it was just a joke. The defence is the foreseen shot: recognise the probe as a probe and it loses its power; return a calm, bland, faintly amused nothing, and the sonar reads only flat seabed. As for launching your own: rarely, lightly, and never poisoned.

Practice

  • Catalogue your regular probers and their favourite lines; a probe recognised in advance always misses.
  • Build two or three all-purpose flat returns ("we're happy, thanks for asking") and deliver them with an unbothered face.
  • Watch what a jest is aimed at: barbs cluster around what the joker envies or fears in you. That is useful intelligence flowing backward.

Use this when

  • Use this at weddings, reunions, and review meetings, the natural habitats of the weaponised joke.
  • Use the backward read: the office tease reveals the teaser's file on you; note what they think your sore points are.

Ignore this when

  • Don't answer probes with counter-barbs in the moment; escalation is exactly the reading they hoped for.
  • Don't grow armour so thick that real affection reads as attack; most teasing among friends is just teasing (maxim 241 takes the graceful half).

A picture of it

At a cousin's wedding, an uncle lands his annual line: "Still in the same flat? Your batch-mate bought in that new tower." Last year this produced twenty defensive minutes about property prices, thoroughly enjoyed by the table. This year it produces a smile, "yes, we love the neighbourhood", and a question about his knee surgery. The uncle retires the line permanently. Sonar that returns nothing stops being fired.

Every barb is a question wearing a joke's clothing. You are not obliged to answer either of them.
