Nobody teaches the retreat. Entire careers are spent learning the attack, the launch, the raise, the expansion, while the exit is left to improvisation, which is why so many stories end one season too late: the streak pressed until it snapped, the gains ridden back down the same hill. The discipline is to define enough before the game heats up, in writing, when you are sober, and to treat reaching it as the win, not as the new starting line. This is the household version of the wisdom too: money assigned to a goal, once the goal-number arrives, has finished its race and earns retirement from the track.
Practice
- Write the number down before the run begins: the corpus for the child's education, the valuation you would sell at, the point where the winning streak banks itself.
- When a goal-sum arrives, move it somewhere boring the same month; the market's later opinions become irrelevant to a race already won.
- Practise small retreats: end the negotiation while ahead, leave the party while it is good, close the winning argument one sentence early.
Use this when
- Use this in every bull run, hot streak, and honeymoon quarter; the urge to press "just one more cycle" is the heap talking.
- Use it on visibility too: after the big win at work, bank it with a period of solid, unglamorous delivery rather than an encore hunt.
Ignore this when
- Don't quit at random highs out of fear; the exit is at the PLANNED number, not at the first altitude that makes you dizzy.
- Don't apply it to compounding you never intend to spend; the retirement corpus on autopilot is playing a different, longer game.
A picture of it
Three good market years put the education fund past its target four years early. The spreadsheet says done; the streak says stay. He remembers deciding, years ago at the kitchen table, exactly what this money was for, moves it to a fixed instrument that week, and endures two further months of watching the index rise without him. In the third month it gives back a year of gains. His daughter's fund does not attend that event.
Define enough while you are calm. The heap will never suggest it.
