Water shares the good or bad qualities of the strata through which it flows, and man those of the climate in which he is born... 'Tis a triumph of cleverness to correct in oneself such national failings... There are also family failings as well as faults of position, of office or of age.
Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)
The frame is nations; read it as inheritances. Every group that shaped you installed defaults before you could review them: the family's fear of risk, the profession's addiction to hierarchy, the department's cynicism, the generation's blind spots. Water tastes of the rocks it flowed through, and so does judgment. The point is not shame about where you came from. The point is that the failings you absorbed invisibly are visible to everyone else, listed under your name, and correcting even one of them earns disproportionate credit precisely because nobody expects it.
Practice
- Write down the three complaints outsiders make about your profession or cadre. Check each honestly against yourself.
- Ask one trusted outsider, a spouse qualifies, which inherited habit of yours most needs retiring.
- When you catch a default operating ("we don't take risks", "juniors should not speak"), ask whose voice that actually is.
Use this when
- Use this at transitions: new role, new city, new industry. Defaults invisible at home glare abroad.
- Use it on office culture you are about to pass down; you are somebody's strata right now.
Ignore this when
- Don't turn it into contempt for your origins. The same inheritance carried strengths; audit both columns.
- Don't apply it to others as stereotype. It is a mirror, not a lens for judging colleagues by their background.
A picture of it
A capable manager moves from a hierarchical institution to a flat, young company. In week one he waits for instructions, addresses everyone by designation, and sits on a good idea because seniors have not spoken. Nobody told him these were choices; they were the water he had swum in for twenty years. The colleague who thrives made the same journey but had audited the inheritance first, kept the discipline, and dropped the deference.
You cannot choose your strata. You can choose what stays dissolved in you.
