The Art of Prudence (Baltasar Gracián's Maxims)

To be without Passions

The man who cannot be provoked cannot be steered. That is the entire job description of composure.

Self-Mastery

'Tis a privilege of the highest order of mind... There is no higher rule than that over oneself, over one's impulses: there is the triumph of free will.

Baltasar Gracián, 1647 (tr. Joseph Jacobs, 1892)

The original says "without passions," and taken literally that is bad advice; a man who feels nothing is not calm, he is absent. Read it as regulation, not amputation. The feelings arrive, they will always arrive, and the question is who signs the documents while they are in the room. Anger drafting your emails, fear drafting your career choices, envy drafting your opinions of colleagues: each is an unelected officer exercising your signing powers. Rule over your impulses is the one authority nobody can transfer, suspend, or supersede. It is also the only one.

Practice

  • Institute the overnight rule: nothing important gets sent, signed, or declared while the feeling that prompted it is still hot.
  • Name the emotion before the decision: "I am angry" said inwardly demotes anger from author to adviser.
  • Watch your provocation patterns. Whoever reliably makes you react has found your controls; that information is leaking.

Use this when

  • Use this before appraisal discussions, hard negotiations, and family disputes about money; all three are provocation environments.
  • Use it doubly online, where the architecture is built to farm your reactions.

Ignore this when

  • Don't aim for feeling nothing; suppressed is not regulated, and the bill for suppression arrives via the body.
  • Don't stay ice-cold when warmth is due. Regulation includes releasing joy on time.

A picture of it

A message lands at 11 p.m., worded to sting, ambiguous enough to deny. One manager replies at 11:20, four paragraphs, copying two seniors; by morning his reply is the incident. Another sleeps on the identical provocation and sends six flat words at 9 a.m.: "Noted. Will discuss in the morning meeting." Nothing to screenshot, nothing to forward. The sender is left holding an unexploded device of his own manufacture.

Feel everything. Sign nothing while feeling it.
